We love isometrics! Ok, maybe not, but I've been seriously sidelined from cardio because of my knee. Since I am unwilling to give up on the 5 for 365, isometrics it is. I know, I know, its not sweat inducing, heart pumping, physical activity, but I'm trying here. Trust me, I'd much rather be breaking a sweat that doing isometrics. I don't know why, but they just bore me to death. Over the last four days I've been working on abs, knee strengthening, and upper body.
Yesterday (day 18), I broke down and sought the advice of a Dr who specialized in sports medicine. After poking, prodding, twisting my knee in every which way, and taking great pleasure (or so it seemed to me) in causing me additional pain, he giddily diagnosed my problem. (Its never good when the Dr is excited about your injury.) He brought out the text book to show me where I was having trouble and why I was experiencing pain. He explained that he doesn't see my injury much as an "isolated" injury (meaning, with the exception of an inflamed Pes Anserinum Bursa, the rest of my knee is uninjured and working just fine). I was half expecting a team of interns to come in and oogle at my knee, but, oh wait, this isn't Grey's Anatomy. At any rate, he precribed a topical anti-nflamatory, ice, and rest. The great news - he explained that by "rest" he meant no activity that causes pain. So, the rowing machine is OKAY!!! The bad news...I think he bruised me up pretty good, cause my knee now hurts more than when I went in, so I'll have to give it another day or two to recover before getting back to my cardio. But, ahhh! There's a light at the end of my cardio free tunnel!
